You save money because the funds are deducted from your paycheck before federal, state and local taxes are taken out. Although you pay the same price as everyone for the pass or ticket, you are saving upto 40% of the deduction through reduced payroll taxes.

Can I really save that much a year simply by commuting?

Yes, if you're enrolled in the Transit Benefit Fare Program and take advantage of the maximum deduction.

Is the program mandatory for companies?
